New homes in Shedfield welcome Winchester's Mayor

Opening of Shedfield schemeA scheme of 13 affordable homes at Phillimore Gardens in Shedfield was officially opened in January 2019 by Winchester City Council Leader, Cllr Caroline Horrill, Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Frank Pearson, and Chair of HARAH, Cllr Caroline Brook. The homes are a mix of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom homes. Most are for affordable renting, but 4 were sold on a shared ownership basis (part rent, part buy). All the homes have been occupied by local families.

Cllr Caroline Horrill told guests that “There is a real issue in rural areas that local people are unable to afford to live in the places where they were bought up, work, or have strong family connections. However, the council are working hard to solve this and one way is by working closely with HARAH and ensuring new developments like this are made possible. New rural affordable housing in the district is vital for creating sustainable and cohesive communities and that is why as a council, we are committed to finding an affordable housing scheme in every parish in the district"

Jess Bond, former Chair of the Parish Council, who was instrumental in getting the scheme built, described the homes as ’superb…houses we can be proud of. Most impressed!’

The development was made possible when land was provided by local landowners. Sadly they passed away before the homes were completed, but their relatives have described how their parents’ wish was to help the younger generation in the village get on the property ladder.

Shedfield Parish Council have also worked with HARAH to provide 13 homes in the Waltham Chase area of the parish.
