HARAH scheme scoops Top 50 UK Affordable Housing Award

Top 50 UK Affordable Housing Development Awards 2014Earlier this year, Inside Housing magazine assembled a panel of senior housing and regeneration professionals to commend the very best affordable homes.
The judges picked out the best 50 projects which, it was felt, best embodied what makes fantastic regeneration, specialist, small, large and sustainable development.
Developed by HARAH affordable housing partner, the Hyde Group, and constructed by Hampshire-based builder Drew Smith Ltd, Storeys Meadow has been recognised as one of the Top 50 best affordable housing developments and was a trailblazer for the approach promoted by HARAH’s Rural Design Guide.

The discovery of a Bronze Age cremation urn and a Saxon burial site, not to mention the need for ecological work to construct a dormouse bridge within the existing hedgerow significantly delayed the start of construction on these 10 homes for social rent. Winchester Council granted planning permission for the scheme built on a rural exception site in the South Downs National Park, despite 47 objections and used the development’s design, which employs traditional materials to complement surroundings, as a examplar for planning officers. Providing an mix of flats, houses and a bungalow, the development attracted £675,000 grant funding.

“All 10 homes are let at social rent which is impressive” Stuart Macdonald, Judge and former editor, Inside Housing
