HARAH has created new guidance for Parish Councils to help navigate the maze of community-led development initiatives. The guides explain the role of Community Land Trusts, Neighbourhood Plans, Community Right to Build Orders and Community Asset Transfer and suggest sources of expert advice and support.

Earlier this year, Inside Housing magazine assembled a panel of senior housing and regeneration professionals to commend the very best affordable homes. The judges picked out the best 50 projects which, it was felt, best embodied what makes fantastic regeneration, specialist, small, large and sustainable development. Developed by HARAH affordable housing partner, the Hyde Group, and constructed by Hampshire-based builder Drew Smith Ltd, Storeys Meadow has been recognised as one of the Top 50 best affordable housing developments and was a trailblazer for the approach promoted by HARAH’s Rural Design Guide.

We are inviting local Parish Councils and other people who may be interested to join us on Friday 6th June for a bus tour of four recently completed affordable housing schemes in Winchester and East Hampshire; this will include a visit to a site that received planning permission in November. The tour also includes a scenic trip across Winchester and East Hampshire. A buffet lunch will be provided at The Pub with No Name (aka The White Horse) with locally sourced produce. On 6th June, representatives from ten parishes from the Winchester district and five parishes in East Hampshire celebrated the success of five rural affordable housing developments. With the average rural home costing almost 14 times average income in the South East, the need for affordable homes in rural villages has never been greater. In 2013 HARAH partner Action Hampshire researched what it has meant to communities to have a HARAH scheme in their village. The summary results of this survey are being published during Rural Housing Week 2014, providing insight and good practice to enhance rural affordable housing provision in the future.
On the eve of Rural Housing Week 2014, Inside Housing journalist Nick Duxbury returned to his roots in the New Forest village of Martin and talked to Javed Ditta (New Forest District Council) and Chris Buchan-Hepburn (Hyde Housing) about the challenges HARAH overcomes to create rural affordable homes.
